What is Far Infrared Heat?

The electromagnetic spectrum is divided into three segments by wavelength measured in microns. 0.076 to 1.5 microns is "near" infrared, 1.5 to 5.6 microns is "middle" infrared and 5.6 to 1000 microns is "far" infrared. This invisible band of light warms objects without warming the air between the source and the object. The best example of this is the sun. Recall standing in the sun on a cold day. You felt warmth from the sun even though the air temperature was cold. This warmth you feel is far infrared penetrating your body 1.5 to 3.5 inches. Infrared heat is, therefore, a completely safe energy that raises the temperature in objects without having to heat the air in between. Approximately 80% of the sun’s rays fall into the infrared range. (This should not be confused with ultraviolet rays, which are harmful to the skin.) It is not visible to the human eye but can been seen with special cameras that translate the light into visible colors.

Our bodies also radiate far infrared energy through the skin at between 3 and 50 microns. Our palms emit energy between 8 and 14 microns. (You can experience this by holding your palms near each other without touching.) Palm healing, with a 3000-year history in China, is based on the natural healing properties of far infrared.

How Does the Far Infrared work?

The Far Infrared Sauna therapy unit duplicates these healthy far infrared frequencies. The tissues selectively absorb these rays as the water in the cell reacts in a process called "resonant absorption". This "resonant absorption" occurs when the frequency of the far infrared matches the frequency of the water in the cell causing toxins to be dropped off into the blood stream and excreted in sweat, feces and urine. Radiant heat is efficient because it warms you, not the air. The body absorbs as much as 93 percent of this heat, causing perspiration and producing a vast array of healthful benefits.

The sauna employs an infrared heater that radiates heat penetrating the skin to a depth of one and a half to three and a half inches. It operates at the relatively low recommended temperatures of 100 to 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

What is the History of the Sauna?

The sauna was invented by the early Finnish people and was introduced to the world as a notable method for healing. Ancient peoples sat in an enclosure for a period of time where the air was heated, usually by stones in a fire. Sometimes water was dripped on the rocks to create steam. Over the centuries, the sauna became known for its ability to alleviate medical problems. Down through time, sand heating and steam baths were used to create similar health benefits. Using infrared energy to power a sauna follows in this tradition.

How Does The Far Infrared Sauna Compare to Traditional Saunas?

Far Infrared SaunaTraditional high heat saunas usually operate at temperatures of 180 degrees F to 220 degrees F. Most people cannot tolerate this high temperature for very long and it causes the mucous membranes to dry out. This is why water or steam is introduced. Patients use the FIR saunas at between 100 degrees F and 130 degrees F. This feels like a warm dry room and the perspiration characteristics are significantly improved. Not only does the perspiration contain more toxins and less water but also more toxins will be expelled out through your kidneys, liver and even hair due to "resonant absorption".

What Health Benefits Does One Receive When Using the Far Infrared Sauna?

Improves Cardiovascular System. While you calmly relax in the soothing warmth of the Far Infrared Sauna, your body is hard at work. A 20- to 30-minute sauna creates approximately the same amount of perspiration as a six-mile run. And as your body increases sweat production to cool itself, your heart works harder to boost circulation, thus improving your cardiovascular system. (It also should be noted that increased circulation has been shown to relieve acne, eczema, psoriasis, burns, lesions, and cuts. Open wounds heal faster, which reduces scarring. Peripheral blood vessels dilate to help heal muscles and soft tissue, while delivering oxygen-rich blood to oxygen-depleted muscles.)

Medical research indicates that use of a Far Infrared Sauna therapy may be as effective a means of cardiovascular conditioning as regular exercise. This is especially important to those individuals who are not physically capable of exercising.

Relieves Pain

Whole body therapy system.
Infrared heat can help relieve pain by widening blood vessels. This causes increased blood circulation and allows more oxygen to reach injured areas. It also helps reduce pain and speeds up the healing process. Infrared heat has also been used extensively in the treatment of arthritis, rheumatism, and muscle spasms.

Strengthens Immune System.
A typical sauna session will cause a brief 1 to 3 degree F increase in body temperature. Fever is the body’s defense against bacteria, microbes and consequent infection. This beneficial side effect triggers the production of white blood cells (leukocytes) by your bone marrow and killer T cells by your thymus. The result is immune system improvement.

Provides Important Detoxification.
Far infrared (FIR) helps detoxify your body by removing the accumulation of potentially carcinogenic heavy metals and chemicals.

More than 3,000 chemicals are added to our food supply, more than 10,000 chemicals in the form of solvents, emulsifiers and preservatives are used in food processing and storage. When ingested these chemicals can remain in the body for years, altering our metabolism, causing enzyme dysfunction and nutritional deficiencies, creating hormonal imbalances and lowering our threshold of resistance to chronic disease. We are continually subjected to poor air quality, chemically contaminated food and water, household cleansers, paint fumes, pharmaceutical drugs, pesticides, heavy metals (including mercury) and the list goes on and on. Today, studies show that most of us have between 400 and 800 chemical residues stored in the fat cells of our bodies. These chemicals and heavy metals make up the "total toxic burden". When our bodies exceed the limit that we can excrete, we begin to store these toxins. This bioaccumulation seriously compromises our physiological and psychological health and leads to chronic disease.

Toxicity Symptoms

The following symptoms are often related to toxicity: allergies, acne, anxiety, burning skin, brain fog, chronic fatigue, chemical sensitivities, depression, eczema, frequent colds or flu, feeling "sick all over", insomnia, loss of dexterity, low body temperature, memory loss, mood swings, muscle and joint pains and poor concentration. If you have three of more of the above symptoms, you should strongly consider the far infrared sauna.

Infrared Heaters and Electromagnetic Fields

Recently there have been reports detailing the hazards of exposure to certain kinds of electromagnetic fields, such as those from high-tension power lines, cell phones, or from computer display terminals. Infrared heating systems have been tested in Japan and found free of toxic electromagnetic fields. The Swedish National Institute of Radiation Protection has concluded, as well, that infrared heaters are not dangerous. Instead, Japanese researchers have reported that infrared radiant heat antidote the negative effects of toxic electromagnetic sources.

Assists in Weight Control and Removing Cellulite

The Far Infrared Sauna is also exceptional for burning calories, controlling weight, and removing cellulite. A single sauna session will burn as many calories as you would rowing a boat for 30 minutes. Weight loss occurs because body fat becomes water soluble at 100 degrees Fahrenheit and the body will remove it through sweat. Most patients who have attempted weight loss by many diets without success, will be pleased with their results from the FIR sauna. Often times, the inability to lose weight is associated with chemical toxicity.

The Far Infrared Therapy Sauna assists in weight loss in three significant ways:

  1. It effectively reduces heavy metals, which have been directly related to metabolic imbalances in the body ,causing poor digestion and weight gain.
  2. The far infrared sauna decreases fat stored (lipophilic) toxins. Often times weight loss cannot be accomplished unless these toxins are removed first.
  3. Although weight loss due to perspiration (water loss) is quickly regained, sending more blood to the capillaries and converting fats and carbohydrates results in as much as 600 calories burned during one short sauna session.

In summary, the Far Infrared Therapy Sauna will remove excessive moisture, salt, and subcutaneous fat. Sweating is a part of the complex thermoregulatory process of the body, involving substantial increase in heart rate, cardiac output, and metabolic rate, which consumes considerable energy. Weight loss is possible because body fat becomes water soluble at 100°F and the body can sweat out fats, toxins, and heavy metal that it otherwise can't dispose of.

Stress Reduction

Continuous strain on the autonomic nervous system often leads to a high level of stress, one of the elusive causes of many chronic diseases. By facilitating the expansion of capillary vessels thereby improving circulation, stress levels are reduced.
The most immediate and noticeable effect is tremendous relaxation. Relaxation alone can have a profound impact on your health. Read, listen to music, or meditate. In the comfortable warmth your stress will melt away leaving behind a feeling of total rejuvenation.

World-Wide Reports on Infrared Sauna Use

Over the last 25 years, Japanese and Chinese researchers and clinicians have completed extensive research on infrared treatments and report many provocative findings. In Japan, there is an "infrared society" composed of medical doctors and physical therapists dedicated to further infrared research. Their findings support the health benefits of infrared therapy as a method of healing.

There have been over 700,000 infrared thermal systems sold in the Orient for whole-body treatments. An additional 30 million people have received localized infrared treatment in the Orient, Europe, and Australia with lamps, which emit the same 2 to 25 micron wave bands as employed in a whole-body system. In Germany, physicians in an independently developed form have used whole-body infrared therapy for over 80 years.

Synergy of Infrared Sauna and Floatation Therapy

When using the infrared Sauna in conjunction with floatation therapy, the most efficacious way of combining the two is by first using the sauna followed by a floating session. The deep cleansing of the pores caused by the sauna, as well as the relaxation induced in the body, greatly enhances the floatation experience. The opening of the body’s pores clears the pathways for the superior absorption of Magnesium from the Epsom salts. Most of us are deficient in this important mineral which is the body’s natural tranquilizer. Magnesium is called the “anti-stress mineral” because it aids in relaxing nerves, relieving tension and is important in muscle contraction and relaxation. After combining the two treatments of Infrared Sauna and Floatation, one has the sense of total renewal, profound well-being, a deep inner cleansing, and heightened clarity of the mind and senses.
